Awards Season 2026: Directors Guild Awards (DGA) and Independent Spirit Awards Winners

A little bit of a catch-up on how the 2026 awards season has been going, as a couple of major awards have been handed out in the last few weeks. Here's all the news you may have missed:

DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS

On Saturday 7th February 2026, the Directors' Guild Awards (DGA) were handed out. The film winners are:

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Films: Paul Thomas Anderson (One Battle After Another)

Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film: Charlie Polinger (The Plague)

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary: Mstyslav Chernov (2000 Meters To Andriivka)

This didn't feel like a surprise, to be honest. Anderson has been a standout winner throughout this awards season (and rightly so), so it feels like another step on the path to Oscar night.

INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS

On Sunday 15th February 2026, the 41st Film Independent Spirit Awards- recognising films made wholly or partly outside the traditional studio system- took place.

Here's a full list of film winners.

Best Feature: Train Dreams

Best Lead Performance: Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I'd Kick You)

Best Supporting Performance: Naomi Ackie (Sorry, Baby)

Best Breakthrough Performance: Kayo Martin (The Plague)

Best Director: Clint Bentley (Train Dreams)

Best Screenplay: Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby)

Best First Screenplay: Alex Russell (Lurker)

Best Cinematography: Train Dreams

Best Editing: The Testament Of Ann Lee

Best First Feature: Lurker

Best International Film: The Secret Agent

Best Documentary: The Perfect Neighbor

John Cassavetes Award: This Island (Esta Isla)

Robert Altman Award: The Long Walk

The John Cassavetes Award is given to the creative team of a film budgeted at less than $1 million, whilst the Robert Altman Award is presented to the ensemble cast of the movie, its director, and its casting director(s).

Train Dreams was the big winner of the evening with three awards, whilst Sorry, Baby and Lurker walked away with two apiece. Despite multiple nominations, Peter Hujar's Day, Blue Sun Palace, One Of Them Days and Twinless didn't win anything.

Congratulations to all winners!

The next major awards news will come this weekend (Sunday 22nd February) with this year's BAFTA Film Awards. I'll update on those as soon as I can after the ceremony.

Awards Season 2026: Directors Guild Awards (DGA), and Producers Guild Awards (PGA) Nominations

So the last little bit of catch-up admin I wanted to do before I do my Oscar nominations predictions was to detail and briefly discuss the nominations from two of the major guilds which came out last week. These will certainly help with my predictions for two major categories, being as they are the nominations from the Directors Guild Awards and the Producers Guild Awards.

DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS (DGA)

The film nominees for the 78th Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards were announced on Thursday 8th January 2026:

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film
Paul Thomas Anderson (One Battle After Another)
Ryan Coogler (Sinners)
Guillermo del Toro (Frankenstein)
Josh Safdie (Marty Supreme)
ChloƩ Zhao (Hamnet)

Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film
Hasan Hadi (The President's Cake)
Harry Lighton (Pillion)
Charlie Polinger (The Plague)
Alex Russell (Lurker)
Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby)

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary
Mstyslav Chernov (2000 Meters to Andriivka)
Geeta Gandbhir (The Perfect Neighbor)
Sara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni (Cutting Through Rocks)
Elizabeth Lo (Mistress Dispeller)
Laura Poitras and Mark Obenhaus (Cover-Up)

In my mind, Anderson, Coogler, del Toro, and Zhao are virtually confirmed for the Oscar nod; the sticking point is going to be whether Safdie joins them or whether the fifth place will go to Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value. Whilst Trier misses out here, he has received Best Director nods at the Critics' Choice and the Golden Globes. Safdie also received a nod at the Critics' Choice. Either way, it feels a bit superfluous to be worrying: it's almost certainly going to be Paul Thomas Anderson who wins in the end.

The DGA Awards ceremony is on Saturday 7th February 2026.

PRODUCERS GUILD AWARDS (PGA)

The film nominees for the 37th Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards were announced on Friday 9th January 2026:

The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures
Bugonia
F1
Frankenstein
Hamnet
Marty Supreme
One Battle After Another
Sentimental Value
Sinners
Train Dreams
Weapons

Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures
The Bad Guys 2
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle
Elio
KPop Demon Hunters
Zootopia 2

Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures
(previously announced)
The Alabama Solution
Cover-Up
Mr Nobody Against Putin
My Mom Jayne
Ocean with David Attenborough
The Perfect Neighbor
The Tale of Silyan

So the surprises here are F1 and Weapons; for the rest of awards season, the latter has been flagged up for Amy Madigan's performance whilst the former has been recognised in many below-the-line technical awards (usually sound and editing). It's the first either film has received a Best Picture equivalent nod. I don't know if the Academy will necessarily follow suit but we have less than a week to find out.

The PGA Awards will be handed out on Saturday 28th February 2026.

Before I forget, there's one last stop we will be making on the awards season trail before we get to the Oscar nominations, and that will be the nominations for this year's Razzies which- as is tradition- are due out the day before the Oscar nominations (so the cinematic crocks of crap they're dishonouring will be revealed on Wednesday 21st January 2026).

As I now have all the information I will have to do my Oscar nomination predictions, I might do them early next week rather than waiting til Wednesday. Keep your eyes out for them.

Awards Season 2025: Producers Guild Awards (PGA), and Directors Guild Awards (DGA) Winners

It's a two-for-one on guild awards nonsense today, folks, and it means we are a bit closer to working out what might get Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars in just over three weeks' time. So let's get on with it!

DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS

On Saturday 8th February 2025, the Directors' Guild Awards (DGA) were handed out. The film winners are:

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Films: Sean Baker (Anora)

Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film: RaMell Ross (Nickel Boys)

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary: Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev (Porcelain War)

Cat, meet pigeons... this is a bit of a surprise for me, as- if you read the last post- you'll know I was fully expecting Brady Corbet to win for The Brutalist (following on from his Golden Globes win and cementing his place as frontrunner for the Little Naked Gold Man). Now this has made things a bit more interesting. Always fun when awards season feels more like a contest and less like a coronation. But surely that's where the surprises end, right?

--------------

PRODUCERS GUILD AWARDS (PGA)

The 36th Producers Guild Awards (PGA) were also handed out on Saturday 8th February. The film winners are:

Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures: Anora

Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures: Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story

Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures: The Wild Robot

Wrong! For both major guilds, whose membership body aligns very closely with the voting members of the Academy, to pick Anora as their winner has shaken things up a bit. Whilst neither guild has a 100% record of going with the Academy's eventual winner, it's telling and gives a bit of pause to those prognosticators and psephologists who may have assumed this was all a done deal. It isn't over until the presenter says "And the Oscar goes to..."

Congratulations to all winners!

Up next this awards season, we have the Writers Guild Awards (WGA) next Saturday (15th February 2025) and the BAFTA Film Awards next Sunday (16th February 2025).

Awards Season 2025: Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) Awards, and Directors Guild Awards (DGA) Nominations

It's a two-for-one kind of day when it comes to movie awards, so let's not beat around the bush; let's get right down to it!

SCREEN ACTORS' GUILD (SAG) AWARDS

This afternoon (Wednesday 8th January), the nominations for the 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were announced. Due to the fast-moving wildfires currently raging around the Los Angeles area, the in-person event which would have usually seen the nominations announced was cancelled (our of "an abundance of caution" and rightly so) and instead the nominees were confirmed via a press release.

Below is the list of film nominations:

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
Anora
A Complete Unknown
Conclave
Emilia PƩrez
Wicked

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Adrien Brody (The Brutalist)
TimothƩe Chalamet (A Complete Unknown)
Daniel Craig (Queer)
Colman Domingo (Sing Sing)
Ralph Fiennes (Conclave)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl)
Cynthia Erivo (Wicked)
Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez)
Mikey Madison (Anora)
Demi Moore (The Substance)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown)
Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last Showgirl)
Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson)
Ariana Grande-Butera (Wicked)
Zoe SaldaƱa (Emilia PƩrez)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Jonathan Bailey (Wicked)
Yura Borisov (Anora)
Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain)
Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown)
Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice)

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
Deadpool & Wolverine
Dune: Part Two
The Fall Guy
Gladiator II
Wicked

Wicked leads the pack with a whopping five nominations, with Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown in second place with four. Emilia PĆ©rez and Anora both have three apiece.

There's a couple of interesting curveballs in the SAG choices; this is the first awards recognition for Monica Barbaro (who plays musician Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown), Jamie Lee Curtis (who plays the best friend to Pamela Anderson's character in The Last Showgirl) and Jonathan Bailey (who plays Fiyero in Wicked). I think it's safe to say that the Best Actor Oscar category is pretty much locked. In fact, I'd say there's a strong core to each of the acting categories, but still room for some surprises.

The SAG Awards will be handed out on Sunday 23rd February 2025, with the ceremony streaming on Netflix. Kristen Bell (The Good Place, Veronica Mars, Frozen) will be taking on host duties.

=======

DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS (DGA)

Wednesday also saw the announcement of the nominees for the 77th Directors' Guild Awards. The film nominees are as follows:

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film
Jacques Audiard (Emilia PƩrez)
Sean Baker (Anora)
Edward Berger (Conclave)
Brady Corbet (The Brutalist)
James Mangold (A Complete Unknown)

Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film
Payal Kapadia (All We Imagine As Light)
Megan Park (My Old Ass)
RaMell Ross (Nickel Boys)
Halfdan Ullmann TĆøndel (Armand)
Sean Wang (Didi)

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary
(previously announced)
Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev (Porcelain War)
Julian Brave Noisecat and Emily Kassie (Sugarcane
Johan Grimonprez (Soundtrack To A Coup D’etat)
Ibrahim Nash’at (Hollywoodgate)
Natalie Rae and Angela Patton (Daughters)

Interesting that the DGA have gone with James Mangold over Coralie Fargeat (The Substance). Will the Academy follow suit? We have to wait until next Friday to find that out.

The DGA Awards will be give out on 8th February 2025.

Congratulations to all nominees!

There'll be a short post this coming Friday (10th January) when the Producers' Guild Awards (PGA) nominees will be announced.

Awards Season 2024: Awards Winners Round-Up

Due to a combination of factors (don't you just hate it when life gets in the way?), I've not been up to updating the awards season tracker. But time stands still for no nerd, which means that in the meantime, no less than five (yes, five) of the major awards bodies have handed out their gold/silver/glassware.

So brace yourself for a positive deluge of awards results, and get ready to see a lot of the same names over and over again. Let's begin!

Three awards for Oppenheimer, including the SAG-equivalent of Best Picture, makes them the big winner of the night. Lily Gladstone's win here will be very welcome in keeping her Oscar hopes alive.

INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS

Also on Sunday 25th February, the 39th Film Independent Spirit Awards- recognising films made wholly or partly outside the traditional studio system- took place.

The Holdovers was the biggest winner of the night, with three awards; Past Lives and American Fiction took home two apiece.

Congratulations to all winners!

So, after all of this is taken into consideration, where does it look like the awards season is headed, as we get into the home strait with only the Razzies and the Oscars left to announce? From my position, this is what I'm thinking:
  • Oppenheimer looks to be in a strong position to win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor.
  • Da'Vine Joy Randolph is almost certainly going to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
  • It feels like a two-horse race between Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone for Best Actress, but I'd say Gladstone's SAG win puts her slightly ahead.
  • Barbie's best chance of any kind of Oscar win is almost certainly Best Original Song, although it may also get several of the technical awards (if they don't go to Poor Things or Oppenheimer)
  • There's a couple of films that were low on my radar that I really need to get to watch!

The next- and indeed final- weekend of the 2024 awards season comes on the weekend of 9th/10th March with the Razzies and the Oscars announced that weekend.

Awards Season 2024: Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) Awards, Directors Guild Awards (DGA), and Producers Guild Awards (PGA) Nominations

Roll up, roll up, ladies and gents, for not one, not two, but three (yes, three) major bits of awards news as- over the past few days- three of the major guilds have announced their awards nominations for this year.

So, let's dispense with the faffing around, and let's dive straight in.

DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS (DGA)

Wednesday (10th January 2024) saw the announcement of the nominees for the 76th Directors' Guild Awards. The film nominees are as follows:

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film
Greta Gerwig (Barbie)
Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things)
Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer)
Alexander Payne (The Holdovers)
Martin Scorsese (Killers Of The Flower Moon)

Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film
Cord Jefferson (American Fiction)
Manuela Martelli (Chile '76)
Noora Niasari (Shayda)
A.V. Rockwell (A Thousand And One)
Celine Song (Past Lives)

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary
(previously announced)
Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp (Bobi Wine: The People's President)
Mstyslav Chernov (20 Days In Mariupol)
Madeleine Gavin (Beyond Utopia)
Davis Guggenheim (Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie)
D. Smith (Kokomo City)

Greta Gerwig becomes the third woman director to receive two DGA nominations (after Kathryn Bigelow and Jane Campion). No real shocks or surprises in the "theatrical feature film" category; I fully expect to see this replicated in the Oscars Best Director category.

The "Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film" has been named for former DGA president and director Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter, Gorillas In The Mist, The World Is Not Enough) who passed away in 2021.

The 76th Annual DGA Awards will take place on Saturday 10th February 2024

======

SCREEN ACTORS' GUILD (SAG) AWARDS

This afternoon (Friday 12th January), the nominations for the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were announced. Again, they were announced via Instagram Live, with Issa Rae (Insecure, Barbie, American Fiction) and Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Eternals, Silicon Valley) hosting.

Below is the list of film nominations:

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
American Fiction
Barbie
The Color Purple
Killers Of The Flower Moon
Oppenheimer

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Bradley Cooper (Maestro)
Colman Domingo (Rustin)
Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers)
Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer)
Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Annette Bening (Nyad)
Lily Gladstone (Killers Of The Flower Moon)
Carey Mulligan (Maestro)
Margot Robbie (Barbie)
Emma Stone (Poor Things)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction)
Willem Dafoe (Poor Things)
Robert De Niro (Killers Of The Flower Moon)
Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer)
Ryan Gosling (Barbie)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer)
Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple)
PenƩlope Cruz (Ferrari)
Jodie Foster (Nyad)
Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers)

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
Barbie
Guardians Of The Galaxy: Volume 3
Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny
John Wick: Chapter 4
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Barbie and Oppenheimer lead the field with four nods apiece, while Killers Of The Flower Moon and American Fiction have three.

A couple of interesting admissions and omissions: this is the first time PenĆ©lope Cruz has received any major awards love for Ferrari (and this is one of the first major awards to even recognise Michael Mann's biopic); Leonardo DiCaprio's omission in the Best Actor category has raised a few eyebrows, as has the complete shut-out of Todd Haynes' May December (three of its main cast- Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton- have appeared in many other awards shortlists). I was surprised not to see either Sandra Hüller (for Anatomy Of A Fall) or Greta Lee (for Past Lives) recognised for Best Actress.

The SAG Awards will be handed out on Saturday 24th February 2024, with the ceremony streaming on Netflix.

=======

PRODUCERS GUILD AWARDS (PGA)

Today (Friday 12th January 2024) also saw the nominations for the 35th Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards. The nominated films are:

The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures
American Fiction
Anatomy Of A Fall
Barbie
The Holdovers
Killers Of The Flower Moon
Maestro
Oppenheimer
Past Lives
Poor Things
The Zone Of Interest

Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures
The Boy And The Heron
Elemental
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures
(previously announced)
20 Days In Mariupol
American Symphony
Beyond Utopia
The Disappearance Of Shere Hite
The Mother Of All Lies
Smoke Sauna Sisterhood
Squaring The Circle (The Story Of Hipgnosis)

There's been some comment made that the PGA has included two international features in the "Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures" categories, with French courtroom drama Anatomy Of A Fall and Holocaust drama The Zone Of Interest both included. I think it just goes to show the depth and breadth of international film, and it's always good to see when films break out of their own narrowly-defined categories to reach wider acclaim. I do feel that the Academy is going to follow suit, although I think it may be the former rather than the latter. But who knows?

The PGA Awards are due to be handed out on Sunday 25th February 2024.

Congratulations to all nominees!

Coming up next for awards season: the Critics' Choice Awards will be given out on Sunday (14th January)

Awards Season 2023: Directors' Guild Awards (DGA) Winners and BAFTA Film Awards Winners

After a quiet couple of weeks, we are back on the awards trail with both the Directors Guild Awards and the BAFTA Film Awards being handed out this weekend. So who were the big winners? Let's find out together, shall we?

DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS

On Saturday (18th February), the Directors' Guild Awards (DGA) were handed out. The film winners are:

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Films: Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All At Once)

Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director: Charlotte Wells (Aftersun)

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary: Sara Dosa (Fire Of Love)

The Daniels' win is a bit of a surprise, as I felt the high-concept what-the-everloving-fuck-is-going-on-now vibe of Everything Everywhere All At Once might have been too rich for the blood of the DGA voters, with Spielberg's thoughtful elegy to cinema The Fabelmans a much more likely candidate. Worth saying that- whilst the DGA is a fairly reliable precursor to the Best Director Oscar- it's not got a 100% conversion record, so Spielberg might still nab the Oscar, although this has put the Daniels very much in contention.

BAFTA

This evening (19th February 2022), the 76th British Academy Film Awards were given out in a star-studded ceremony, hosted for the first time by Richard E. Grant.

Jamie Lee Curtis, Julianne Moore, Florence Pugh, Eddie Redmayne, Ke Huy Quan. Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, Cate Blanchett. Bill Nighy, Sir Patrick Stewart, Emma Thompson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan and Viola Davis were among some of the stars in attendance to celebrate the best in film for 2022.

Usually, the event is broadcast on the BBC with a time delay but for this year, there's a weird kind of hybrid thing going on where the final four awards of the evening (EE Rising Star, Leading Actor, Leading Actress, and Best Film) were broadcast live, whilst the rest of the ceremony was shown on a delay.

Here's a full list of BAFTA winners.

Best Film: All Quiet On The Western Front

Outstanding British Film: The Banshees Of Inisherin

Leading Actor: Austin Butler (Elvis)

Leading Actress: Cate Blanchett (TƔr)

Supporting Actor: Barry Keoghan (The Banshees Of Inisherin)

Supporting Actress: Kerry Condon (The Banshees Of Inisherin)

Director: Edward Berger (All Quiet On The Western Front)

Original Screenplay: The Banshees Of Inisherin

Adapted Screenplay: All Quiet On The Western Front

Outstanding Debut By A British Writer, Director Or Producer: Charlotte Wells (writer/director) (Aftersun

Animated Film: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

Documentary: Navalny

Film Not In The English Language: All Quiet On The Western Front

Cinematography: All Quiet On The Western Front

Costume Design: Elvis

Editing: Everything Everywhere All At Once

Make Up And Hair: Elvis

Original Music: All Quiet On The Western Front

Production Design: Babylon

Sound: All Quiet On The Western Front

Special Visual Effects: Avatar: The Way Of Water

Casting: Elvis

Short Animation: The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse

Short Film: An Irish Goodbye

Rising Star: Emma Mackey

BAFTA Fellowship: Sandy Powell

The big winner of the night was All Quiet On The Western Front with seven awards (including, somewhat surprisingly, Best Picture), with The Banshees Of Inisherin and Elvis taking home four apiece.

I'm happy to see The Banshees Of Inisherin doing well (especially with the two Supporting acting wins), although it's been reported that there was a bit of a La La Land moment with Best Supporting Actress. Last year's Best Supporting Actor winner Troy Kotsur (CODA) presented the award using sign language... and his interpreter mistakenly said Carey Mulligan (who had been nominated in the same category for She Said) instead of Kerry Condon. This didn't make the TV broadcast, but a lot of news outlets picked it up nonetheless.

Congratulations to all winners!

There's more awards news coming up next weekend (25th/26th February 2023) with Producers Guild Awards (PGA) and the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) being handed out.

Awards Season 2023: Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) Awards and Directors Guild Awards (DGA) Nominations

So we've got a 2-4-1 on awards news today, with two major guilds announcing their nominations. I can see you're all positively besides yourselves waiting to find out who's been mentioned, so without further ado, here we go!

SCREEN ACTORS' GUILD (SAG) AWARDS

This afternoon (Wednesday 11th January), the nominations for the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were announced. Again, they were announced via Instagram Live, with Ashley Park (Emily In Paris, Tales Of The City) and Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus, Split) doing the honours.

Below is the list of film nominations:

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
Babylon
The Banshees Of Inisherin
Everything Everywhere All At Once
The Fabelmans
Women Talking

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Austin Butler (Elvis)
Colin Farrell (The Banshees Of Inisherin)
Brendan Fraser (The Whale)
Bill Nighy (Living)
Adam Sandler (Hustle)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Cate Blanchett (TƔr)
Viola Davis (The Woman King)
Ana de Armas (Blonde)
Danielle Deadwyler (Till)
Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Paul Dano (The Fabelmans)
Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees Of Inisherin)
Barry Keoghan (The Banshees Of Inisherin)
Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once)
Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever)
Hong Chau (The Whale)
Kerry Condon (The Banshees Of Inisherin)
Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All At Once)
Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All At Once)

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
Avatar: The Way Of Water
The Batman
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Top Gun: Maverick
The Woman King

Both The Banshees Of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once have a staggering five nominations apiece.

A couple of surprises here: Adam Sandler making up the Best Actor category, for one. This is the first time his name has been mentioned this awards season. There's also some interesting choices with Best Actress, with Michelle Williams absent for The Fabelmans. That said, there's a whole bunch of superb lead actress performances this year that someone isn't going to make the cut. A pleasant surprise to see Stephanie Hsu also mentioned in Best Supporting Actress, as her role is certainly more integral to the plot (as good as Jamie Lee Curtis is).

Another surprise was the omission of Everything Everywhere All At Once in the Stunt Ensemble category; given the dizzying action sequences in that film, it seemed a safe bet.

The SAG Awards will be handed out on Sunday 26th February 2022. At present, the ceremony will be broadcast online (via Netflix's YouTube page) with the show airing on Netflix from next year.

DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS (DGA)

Were the SAG Awards not excitement enough for one day, we also have the rest of the Directors' Guild Awards (DGA) nominees announced today as well. And here they are:

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film

Well, now, this is interesting... Joseph Kosinski gets a mention instead of James Cameron or Baz Luhrmann. I've got a feeling in my waters that at least three (or four) of these names will be part of the Academy's choices- a nomination for the Daniels, Spielberg, and McDonagh feels incredibly likely. I'd have liked to have seen either Sarah Polley or Gina Prince-Bythewood get a nod but (much like with the Best Actress race) there's such a breadth and depth of breathtaking directorial work this year that not all of them are going to be recognised as much as they perhaps should.

The winners will be announced at the 75th Annual DGA Awards on Saturday 18th February 2023.

Congratulations to all nominees!

It's that time of year when there's lots of awards buzz. Tomorrow (Thursday 12th January) sees this year's Producers Guild Awards (PGA) nominations so there'll be a short post about that at some point.
