Comic Book Movie Round-Up: March 2021

It's been a while since there was news enough to warrant doing one of these, but I figured it would be nice to have a look at what's going on in the world of comic-book movies (and to give people a respite from awards stuff left, right, and centre).

So let's take a look at what we've got.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD

Yesterday, our proverbial cup runneth over with a veritable slew of posters and a suitably raucous and NSFW red-band trailer for The Suicide Squad.

Just me, or is anyone else getting some real Dirty Dozen vibes from these posters? Here's the trailer (like I said above, NSFW):

In addition to all of this, a dozen character posters were also released!

So, from top left to bottom right, we have: Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Savant (Michael Rooker), Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Peacemaker (John Cena), Thinker (Peter Capaldi), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), Weasel (Sean Gunn), and King Shark (performed by Steve Agee [who also plays John Economos] and voiced by... Sylvester Stallone!)

The trailer also gives brief glimpses of Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Flula Borg as Javelin, Mayling Ng as Mongal and Nathan Fillion (enjoying some Mr Pibb) as TDK, with Alice Braga's Sol Soria (leader of the Corto Maltese resistance) who- I'm assuming reluctantly?-  teams up with Task Force X.

The Suicide Squad (written and directed by James Gunn) will be released in cinemas [where possible] and on HBO Max on August 6 2021.

Bring on the carnage!

And since we're talking about carnage...

VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE

In a list of "sequels nobody asked for or wanted", a sequel to the execrable Venom would be on that list. Despite not much going for it, it made over $856m at the box office. When a movie makes this much bank, a sequel is all-but guaranteed (especially if, as Venom did, you cynically include a mid-credits scene teasing a well-known character who's itching to cross swords with the symbiote).

Either way, we have Venom: Let There Be Carnage on the way. Carnage being the alter ego of serial killer Cletus Kasady (played by Woody Harrelson at the end of Venom in what looked like a truly dreadful hairpiece). So, he'll be causing some kind of havoc for Eddie Brock in this film, which is being directed by Andy Serkis.

Along with Harrelson, Tom Hardy is, of course, reprising his role as Eddie Brock/Venom, as is Michelle Williams (playing Annie Weying, Brock's ex-fiancee). New cast members include Stephen Graham and Oscar-nominated actress Naomie Harris (Moonlight, SPECTRE), who is tipped to be playing Kasady's lover who goes by the name Shriek.

After a couple of COVID-related delays, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is due on September 17 2021

SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS

Whilst Shazam! Fury Of The Gods might still be a few years away (it's not due to drop til 2023) but this week saw some interesting casting news: the movie's villain has reportedly been cast. In the role of the villainous Hespera (daughter of Atlas) is none other... than Helen Mirren! The Oscar-winning actress will be squaring up against Zachary Levi in the David F. Sandberg-directed sequel.

You might do a bit of a double-take that an actress of Mirren's calibre will be slumming it in a comic-book movie- but don't forget, she's also been in Fast And Furious 8, the RED movies, and she's voiced a dragon in Monsters University, so it's all fair game.

BLACK ADAM

There still isn't a concrete release date for Black Adam as yet; however, a recent Instagram post by Dwayne Johnson confirmed that filming was "approximately three weeks away" from starting.

Not only that, but this week saw some more interesting casting news which means that the Justice Society of America is now complete. Because joining Johnson and the previously announced Noah Centineo (Atom Smasher), Aldis Hodge (Hawkman), and Quintessa Swindell (Cyclone) is... Pierce Brosnan, who'll be playing Dr. Fate!

Black Adam will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (House Of Wax, Orphan, Jungle Cruise)

THE FLASH

Finally, there's two bits of news for Andy Muschietti's Flash movie. The first is that, due to scheduling conflicts with Apple TV show The Morning Show, Billy Crudup will not be reprising his role as Henry Allen; the role will now be taken by Ron Livingston (Office Space, The Conjuring).

He'll be joining Sasha Calle (The Young And The Restless), Maribel Verdú (Y Tu Mamá También, Pan's Labyrinth), and Kiersey Clemons (Bad Neighbours 2, Antebellum) who are playing Supergirl, Nora Allen, and Iris West respectively. Clemons was originally cast as Iris for Justice League but was one of the characters dropped when Zack Snyder left the project; she does however appear in the Snyder Cut.

It's been also widely reported that Michael Keaton is due to get back in the Batsuit for this film, appearing alongside Ben Affleck as different iterations of the Caped Crusader. However, this week Keaton has given a word of caution saying that his participation is not guaranteed, due to the ongoing COVID pandemic. An internet rumour has suggested that Christian Bale may be potentially tapped to replace Keaton's Batman if he's unable to commit to the role, but we shall see...

The film is still currently set for a November 2022 release.

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME

In February, the title of the third Sony/MCU Spider-Man movie was announced.

Spider-Man: No Way Home. Not Phone Home. Not Home-Wrecker. And certainly not Home Slice.

In a cute little vid, Tom Holland (Peter Parker), Jacob Batalon (Ned), and Zendaya (MJ) are exasperated that they've all been given- and have given out- fake titles. This, Jacob and Zendaya claim, is squarely down to Tom and his penchant for spoilers. "Name me one thing I've actually spoiled", he asks to which Zendaya responds "the last movie title". She ain't wrong...

So, we know the title. We know that the three main teen characters are back. We know Marisa Tomei and Tony Revolori will be back as Aunt May and Flash Thompson respectively. We know Jon Watts (who's directed both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home) is back in the director chair. What else do we know?

We know that Benedict Cumberbatch is appearing in the film as Dr. Stephen Strange, before his own sequel in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. Strange will likely take the role of Parker's mentor figure (in the same way Tony Stark did in Homecoming and Nick Fury did in Far From Home).

We know that Alfred Molina is reprising his role as Dr. Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2. I was tremendously excited by this news as Molina is not only a fantastic actor, but his Doc Ock is the best portrayal of a live-action Spider-Man villain on film to date. Don't @ me.

We also know that Jamie Foxx will be reprising his role as Max Dillon/Electro from Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Less thrilled about this, if I'm honest. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 tried to cram in so much to its run time that Foxx didn't get to make the impact he should have. Maybe he will here (if the role isn't a glorified cameo?)

There's been speculation that this might set up the Sinister Six- the half-dozen cabal of Spidey's most notorious villains, which traditionally includes Doctor Octopus, Electro, Mysterio, Vulture, and Sandman, along with a number of other villains such as Kraven The Hunter, Green Goblin, Shocker, Lizard, Black Cat, Rhino, and Venom. It's worth noting that all bar Kraven, Hobgoblin and Black Cat (whilst it seems clear that Felicity Jones' character Felicia in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was meant to reference her, it's not canon; again, don't @ me) have appeared on screen in some iteration or other. A Sinister Six movie has long been in the pipeline, so this might be the kick up the exhaust it needs.

There's been massive rumours that both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire definitely are/might be/possibly/potentially reprising their roles as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Other rumours say Garfield yes, Maguire no. Others say it's the villains only. Tom Holland's officially denied it, but- in the immortal words of Mandy Rice-Davies - "well, he would, wouldn't he?"

As it stands at the moment, Spider-Man: No Way Home is due to hit cinemas December 17 2021.

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER

Filming for the Thorquel, directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, and Christian Bale, has been taking place in Australia. Set photos have revealed the presence of several of the Guardians of the Galaxy (including Star-Lord, Nebula, and Kraglin; no surprise as Thor headed off with them at the end of Avengers: Endgame).

It also looks like Loki's penchant for putting on plays to dramatise Asgardian history has rubbed off on someone, as Matt Damon and Liam Hemsworth have been seen on set, playing Actor Loki and Actor Thor from Thor: Ragnarok - with a surprise addition of Melissa McCarthy as Actress Hela! Clearly keeping up the goofy vibe from Ragnarok then...

Thor: Love And Thunder is currently due for release on May 6 2022.

Well, that's quite enough to be going on with, I think. Hope you enjoyed it!

State Of Play: March 2021

Hope everyone is doing as well as you can be, given current circumstances, and keeping yourselves occupied.

There are a few reasons to be cautiously optimistic, that there's light at the end of the tunnel (and it's not just an Intercity 125 coming to knock seven bells out of us again!)

This week saw some big film news, so I figured time to do an update!

I'll be honest, I wasn't massively surprised by this week's news that Black Widow was a) being moved again (from May 7 to July 9), and b) being made available via Disney+ Premier on the same day.

The situation is still, to put it mildly, changeable. Cinemas in New York and Los Angeles are starting to reopen; UK-based cinema chain Cineworld (who also own Regal Cinemas in the US) have announced they will start to reopen Regal locations in early April.

In the UK, cinemas in England and Scotland (at least) are working to the assumption that they will be able to reopen for business from May 17th, if COVID-19 is still being controlled at a reasonable level. That said, cinemas will still need to operate at reduced capacity (at least initially) and with social distancing protocols in place. In the numbers game, it's not going to be worth Marvel's time to put it out until the situation is a bit more stable.

Unsurprisingly, this has had a knock-on effect to some of the other Marvel movies that are due to be released this year.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings will now be released (it is assumed theatrically only) on September 3; there's no news at present whether Eternals or Spider-Man: No Way Home (due in November and December respectively) will be affected.

A couple of random bits of MCU news: in December, when Christian Bale's casting in Thor: Love And Thunder was announced (Bale will be playing Gorr The God Butcher), a new release date was also given: May 6, 2022. This will now put the Thor fourquel (Thorquel?) after Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, which had its own date changed to March 25 2022.

But whilst Black Widow gets bumped, there's no such plans to change the date of Cruella (the live-action "prequel" to 101 Dalmatians, starring Emma Stone and Emma Thompson). Like Mulan and Raya And The Last Dragon, Cruella will be getting a cinema release (where possible) and will also be available on Disney+ Premier on the same day. This is Memorial Day weekend in the US, and a usually lucrative time for cinemas.

As they did with Soul, Disney have also announced that Pixar's next movie Luca (a coming-of-age drama involving sea monsters in disguise, with the voices of Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Glazer, and Maya Rudolph) will be available on Disney+ (at no additional charge) from June 18th. Where Disney+ is not available, they are looking at potential cinema releases in those territories.

Other Disney properties shifted around include Ryan Reynolds' Free Guy (now August 13), The King's Man (December 22), Ben Affleck starrer Deep Water (January 14 2022), and star-studded Agatha Christie adaptation Death On The Nile (February 11 2022)

For fans of horror and thrillers, you'll get to see at least two anticipated flicks a little sooner than expected. Paramount have moved A Quiet Place Part II to the aforementioned Memorial Day weekend, whilst Lionsgate have shifted
Spiral: From The Book Of Saw (the ninth- NINTH!- Saw film) forward a week to May 14. Chris Rock, Max Minghella, and Samuel L. Jackson will be playing a game very soon...

On the subject of ninth films in franchises, Universal have decided to move F9 back a month, so it will now premiere on June 25. This set up a clash between Vin Diesel and Tom Hardy, with Sony's Venom sequel due to drop on the same day. Realising they were sunk, Sony have moved Venom: Let There Be Carnage to September.

Universal weren't quite so kind to Minions: The Rise Of Gru, on the other hand; originally due to release on July 3 2020, it first got shunted to July 2 2021 and has now been shunted back another year, to July 1 2022.

Here are some of the current release dates at the moment, correct as of 26th March 2021. This only includes movies whose dates have changed since the last State of Play update (in January).

As Jerry Springer used to say: "Take care of yourselves and each other."

Awards Season 2021: Producers' Guild Awards (PGA) Winners

Just a quick awards update today, to share the winners from last night's Producers Guild Awards (PGA). The film winners are:

Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures: Nomadland

Documentary Film: My Octopus Teacher

Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures: Soul

No surprises with either Nomadland or Soul winning their respective categories. It feels as if the awards were theirs to lose, if you know what I mean? I think this definitely solidifies Nomadland as front runner for the Oscar Best Picture. Mind you, last year I said the same about 1917 and we all know how that ended up...

Congratulations to all the winners!

For those not inclined to awards stuff, you'll be pleased to know there's a bit of a gap until the next ceremony: the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards are next, on Sunday 4th April.

Due to how things are, SAG have made the decision to do a pre-recorded, one-hour special to honour the winners of this year's awards. The show will be recorded the day before the broadcast, so the winners will be known ahead of time.

What's the bets at least one category gets spoiled ahead of time?

Awards Season 2021: Writers' Guild Awards (WGA) Winners

Just a quick post today, to update y'all on some awards nonsense. Yesterday (Sunday 21st February), the Writers' Guild Awards (WGA) were given out.

The film winners were:

Original Screenplay: Promising Young Woman

Adapted Screenplay: Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

Documentary Screenplay: The Dissident

Very happy to see Emerald Fennell's win here. I think a lot of people were surprised that Aaron Sorkin didn't win the Original Screenplay category for The Trial Of The Chicago 7. Sorkin has previously won a screenwriting Oscar (for his adapted screenplay of The Social Network), and also been nominated three further times. I would love to see Fennell take the Best Original Screenplay Oscar. Whether it'll happen is another matter.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm's win has surprised a few people, who considered it a bit of a dark horse in a category that also featured Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, One Night In Miami, News Of The World and The White Tiger (all of which were based on plays or novels, rather than characters). Also, given the very improvised nature of the film, one could argue that the script was essentially non-existent prior to shooting (although Sacha Baron Cohen and the writers will have come up with the broad strokes of scenes etc.). Will it repeat this at the Oscars? I'd say it's unlikely given that both Nomadland and The Father have nods for the Academy Awards. But never say never...

For anyone interested, The Dissident (which got a BAFTA nomination for Best Documentary, but didn't get one at the Oscars) is a documentary about the murder of Washington Post journalist and Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, which is directed by Bryan Fogel and written by Fogel and Mark Monroe.

Congratulations to all winners!

Next up: Producers Guild Awards (PGA) are given out on Wednesday (24th March). I'm gonna stick my neck out and say that Nomadland will win the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. But we shall see...

A full list of nominees can be found here.

By my reckoning, I got 29/33 (88%). Turns out I should have been a bit more confident in my acting predictions, as it's only LaKeith Stanfield that I didn't get. I didn't get either Judas And The Black Messiah or Sound Of Metal in Best Picture, nor Thomas Vinterberg for Best Director. All said though, I'm quite happy with my predictions. And yes, it does mean Glenn Close has been nominated for an Oscar and a Razzie for the same performance... Just goes to show there's no accounting for taste.

Mank leads the nominations with an impressive 10 nods, whilst The Father, Judas And The Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Sound Of Metal, and The Trial Of The Chicago 7 all have six each.

Congratulations to all nominees!

The 93rd Academy Awards will be held on Sunday 25th April 2021, with the ceremony being held in Los Angeles' Union Station and its usual venue, the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center.

It's been a busy week for awards stuff, so those of you who aren't fans of this kind of frippery will be pleased to know there's a bit of a break from it. The next awards update will be Sunday (21st March) when the Writers Guild Awards are handed out.

Awards Season 2021: Tez's Official Academy Award Nomination Predictions

 ...pation.

Tomorrow morning, the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards will be announced. This year, they will be announced by husband-and-wife duo Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Krrish, The White Tiger, Baywatch) and Nick Jonas (Jumanji: The Next Level, Midway, Camp Rock).

As has been my practice for the last few years (well, since 2003), I like to try and predict who will be nominated (this is done for Best Picture, Best Director and the four acting awards). Below is my list of who I think will be named tomorrow.

NB. Since the 2010 ceremony, the Academy rules state that there could be anywhere between five and ten Best Picture nominees. I have selected ten films. If the total number of films nominated is less than ten, but one of the movies selected is named in my list of ten, I will count it as a successful prediction.

This will be the last year in which this will happen, as the Academy have committed to having ten Best Picture nominees from 2022.

BEST PICTURE
Da 5 Bloods
The Father
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Mank
Minari
Nomadland
One Night In Miami
Promising Young Woman
Soul
The Trial Of The Chicago 7

BEST DIRECTOR
Lee Isaac Chung (Minari)
Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman)
David Fincher (Mank)
Aaron Sorkin (The Trial Of The Chicago 7)
Chloé Zhao (Nomadland)

BEST ACTOR
Riz Ahmed (Sound Of Metal)
Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom)
Anthony Hopkins (The Father)
Gary Oldman (Mank)
Steven Yeun (Minari)

BEST ACTRESS
Viola Davis (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom)
Andra Day (The United States Vs. Billie Holiday)
Vanessa Kirby (Pieces Of A Woman)
Frances McDormand (Nomadland)
Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Chadwick Boseman (Da 5 Bloods)
Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial Of The Chicago 7)
Daniel Kaluuya (Judas And The Black Messiah)
Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night In Miami)
Paul Raci (Sound Of Metal)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm)
Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy)
Olivia Colman (The Father)
Amanda Seyfried (Mank)
Youn Yuh-jung (Minari)

Usually a score of 15 is adequate, but given the fact that there could be anywhere between 5 and 10 Best Picture awards, I’ll be happy with a prediction of 18 or higher. Last year, I got 30/34.

With Best Picture, I'm fairly secure with 7 (maybe 8) of the predictions. There's always the chance of a surprise nod for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Sound Of Metal, or News Of The World. Similarly with Best Director, I'd say I'm confident on 3. It wouldn't be out of the realms of possibility for Regina King to score a nomination for One Night In Miami... (which might see Fincher or potentially Fennell shunted out?)

Were I to be totally honest, I'm less confident with the acting awards than I have been in previous years. For each category I'd say I'm only sure of three in each. There's a lot of variables.

Best Actor could see a surprise nod for Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round), Tom Hanks (News Of The World), Tahar Rahim (The Mauritanian) or Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods) [most likely in place of Steven Yeun or Gary Oldman] whilst Amy Adams could get a nod for Hillbilly Elegy and Sidney Flanigan could be a major upset with a nod for Never Rarely Sometimes Always. I went with Andra Day on the strength of the Golden Globes win, but you can't be sure until the names are read out.

In the Supporting Actor category, Boseman and Raci could be replaced by David Strathairn (Nomadland), Bill Murray (On The Rocks), Jared Leto (The Little Things) or even Alan Kim (Minari). The Best Supporting Actress race is still pretty wide open: there could potentially be nominations for Ellen Burstyn (Pieces Of A Woman), Dominique Fishback (Judas And The Black Messiah), Jodie Foster (The Mauritanian), and/or Helena Zengel (News Of The World) in place of any of Seyfried and/or Colman.

The nominations will be announced tomorrow afternoon (around 1:20pm GMT) - there'll be a post up as soon as I can afterwards with the official nominations.

365 Days (an Eastern European Fifty Shades of Grey knock-off) and Dolittle get six nods each, with Fantasy Island getting 5. Depending on how things go on Monday, Glenn Close might be joining a unique little club, being the third person to be nominated for a Razzie and an Oscar for the same performance: the other two are Amy Irving (Yentl) and James Coco (Only When I Laugh).

The Razzies will be given out on Saturday 24th April (the day before the Giving Out of the Little Gold Naked Men [a.k.a. Oscar night]), at which a "Special" Governors' Award will be given to dishonour 2020 - The Worst Calendar Year EVER! It's difficult to disagree with that assessment...

There'll still be a post on Sunday (14th March) where I'll be sharing my predictions on which films will get an Oscar nod on Monday. I see you shiver with antici...
