A full list of nominees can be found here.

With regards to my predictions, I got 29/35 (83%)

A couple of big surprises (dare I say... snubs?) with no love for Greta Gerwig or Margot Robbie. Given the cultural juggernaut that was Barbie, it seems like a bit of an oversight not to nominate its director or leading actress. Lovely to see Hayao Miyazaki get another nomination for The Boy And The Heron (and a nice surprise to see Nimona get a Best Animated Feature nomination). Jodie Foster gets an Oscar nomination, nearly 30 years since her last nod. Lily Gladstone becomes the first Indigenous actor to be nominated for Best Actress.

Oppenheimer leads the field with a huge 13 nominations, with Poor Things taking 11 nods and Killers Of The Flower Moon with 10 nominations.

Congratulations to all nominees!

The 96th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday 10th March 2024, at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center. Jimmy Kimmel will be returning to host for the fourth time.

There's now a little bit of a break in awards season insanity (inanity?) - we'll be picking it back up again on the weekend of 17th/18th February, with the DGA Awards and BAFTA Film Awards respectively.

Awards Season 2024: Razzies Nominations

So, here they are. The nominees for the 44th Golden Raspberry Awards, a.k.a. the Razzies. You'll be pleased to know (possibly?) that some things never change with the Razzies voters and a couple of expected names are present and correct.

WORST PICTURE
The Exorcist: Believer
Expend4bles
Meg 2: The Trench
Shazam! Fury Of The Gods
Winnie the Pooh: Blood And Honey

WORST ACTRESS
Ana de Armas (Ghosted)

Russell Crowe (The Pope's Exorcist)
Vin Diesel (Fast X)
Chris Evans (Ghosted)
Jason Statham (Meg 2: The Trench)
Jon Voight (Mercy)

WORST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Michael Douglas (Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania)
Mel Gibson (Confidential Informant)
Bill Murray (Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania)
Franco Nero (as "The Pope") (The Pope's Exorcist)
Sylvester Stallone (Expend4ables)

WORST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Kim Cattrall (About My Father)
Megan Fox (Expend4bles)
Bai Ling (Johnny & Clyde)
Lucy Liu (Shazam! Fury Of The Gods)
Mary Stuart Masterson (Five Nights At Freddy's)

WORST SCREEN COUPLE
Any 2 "Merciless Mercenaries" (Expend4bles)
Any 2 Money-Grubbing Investors Who Donated to the $400 Million for Remake Rights to The Exorcist
Ana de Armas and Chris Evans (Ghosted)
Salma Hayek and Channing Tatum (Magic Mike's Last Dance)

David Gordon Green (The Exorcist: Believer)

Ben Wheatley (Meg 2: The Trench)

WORST SCREENPLAY
The Exorcist: Believer
Expend4bles
Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny
Shazam! Fury Of The Gods
Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey

So, with very little surprise, Expend4bles leads the pack with seven nominations, with The Exorcist: Believer and Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey tying for second with five each. Comicbook duds Shazam! Fury Of The Gods and Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania have four apiece.

As is usual with the Razzies nominations, there are a couple of films I've never heard of (Johnny & Clyde, Confidential Informant, The Mother) and I certainly won't be racing to check them out.

The "winners" will be handed out in a ceremony on Saturday 9th March, the day before the Oscars.

Having already posted my Oscar predictions earlier this morning (the world has indeed been turned upside down), my next post will be the official Oscar nominations tomorrow.

Awards Season 2024: Tez's Official Academy Award Nomination Predictions

Tomorrow morning (5:30AM PT/8:30AM ET/1:30PM GMT), the nominations for the 96th Academy Awards will be announced. This year, they will be announced by Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2, Joker, Atlanta) and Jack Quaid (Scream [2022], The Hunger Games, The Boys)

Since 2003, I have tried to predict who will be nominated in several of the major categories (Best Picture, Best Director and the four acting awards). Below is my list of who I think will be named tomorrow.

BEST PICTURE
American Fiction
Anatomy Of A Fall
Barbie
The Color Purple
The Holdovers
Killers Of The Flower Moon
Maestro
Oppenheimer
Past Lives
Poor Things

BEST DIRECTOR
Greta Gerwig (Barbie)
Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things)
Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer)
Alexander Payne (The Holdovers)
Martin Scorsese (Killers Of The Flower Moon)

BEST ACTOR
Bradley Cooper (Maestro)
Colman Domingo (Rustin)
Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers)
Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer)
Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction)

BEST ACTRESS
Lily Gladstone (Killers Of The Flower Moon)
Sandra Hüller (Anatomy Of A Fall)
Carey Mulligan (Maestro)
Margot Robbie (Barbie)
Emma Stone (Poor Things)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction)
Robert De Niro (Killers Of The Flower Moon)
Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer)
Ryan Gosling (Barbie)
Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer)
Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple)
Jodie Foster (Nyad)
Julianne Moore (May December)
Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers)

As we now have 10 Best Picture nominees (in addition to the 20 for acting and 5 for directing), I will be happy with any score over 20. Last year, it was 29/35 (83%).

I'm confident of eight of the ten Best Picture nods, with my question marks over The Color Purple and potentially Past Lives. May December and/or The Zone Of Interest could take either place.

I went for the five DGA nominees for Best Director, and I'm fairly confident with them. Bradley Cooper might sneak in for Maestro, but it seems unlikely. There's the potential for Jonathan Glazer to get a surprise nomination for The Zone Of Interest (in the same vein as Ruben Östlund did last year for Triangle Of Sadness); if he does, I'd say The Zone Of Interest will almost definitely get a Best Picture nod.

With Best Actor, I went for the five SAG nominees - although there's still a chance that Leonardo DiCaprio sneaks in for Killers Of The Flower Moon (to the detriment of either Colman Domingo or Jeffrey Wright, sadly). For Best Actress, there's a couple of performances that might make their way in, with Annette Bening (Nyad), Greta Lee (Past Lives), Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple) or even potentially Natalie Portman (May December) in contention.

Best Supporting Actor feels like the most fluid category at the moment; I'm confident with three of my five picks (De Niro, Downey Jr., and Gosling). You might see Willem Dafoe (Poor Things), Charles Melton (May December), or Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers) included; hell, they may even go for a real curveball and nominate someone like Matt Bomer (Maestro) who has had zero presence in awards season thus far.

I'm fairly settled with my choices for Best Supporting Actress, although Julianne Moore is the one potentially most at risk. There's been a bit of a seachange as things have gone on, with May December losing out more and more as awards season has rolled on. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that we could see America Ferrera nominated for Barbie, or Brooks' co-star Taraji P. Henson for The Color Purple. There's a small part of me that would love to see Rosamund Pike nominated for Saltburn, but I've got a feeling that film is a bit too rich for the blood of the Academy voters...

As usual, I'll get a post up as soon as I can tomorrow afternoon with the official nominations.

Later today (Monday 22nd January) should see this year's Razzies nominations. I'll post about them a bit later on.

A full list of nominees in all categories can be found here.

BAFTA previously announced longlists for all categories, so you can see what was in contention for nominations here.

Oppenheimer leads the way with a massive 13 nominations, with Poor Things in second place with 11, and Killers Of The Flower Moon and The Zone Of Interest with nine apiece.

There are a couple of interesting omissions from the lists: whilst both were included on the longlist in the relevant categories, neither Leonardo DiCaprio or Lily Gladstone were nominated for their performances in Killers Of The Flower Moon. No Best Picture nod for Barbie, or Director nomination for Greta Gerwig (although I don't think this necessarily hurts their chances at the Oscars next week). Like I always say, BAFTA do skew toward British talent so the inclusion of films like All Of Us Strangers, The Zone Of Interest, and Saltburn is to be expected.

The nominees for the 2024 Rising Star award - the only BAFTA awarded by public vote- have also been announced: this year's nominees are Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Jacob Elordi (Saltburn), Mia McKenna-Bruce (How To Have Sex), and Sophie Wilde (Talk To Me). Find out more about them, and cast your vote here.

The 77th BAFTA Film Awards will be handed out in just a month's time (on Sunday 18th February) in a ceremony to be hosted by the rather marvellous David Tennant.

Congratulations to all nominees!

If I'm right, then our next stop this awards season will be the Razzies nominations on Monday (22nd January). Should be interesting to see what they come up with this year...

Awards Season 2024: Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) Awards, Directors Guild Awards (DGA), and Producers Guild Awards (PGA) Nominations

Roll up, roll up, ladies and gents, for not one, not two, but three (yes, three) major bits of awards news as- over the past few days- three of the major guilds have announced their awards nominations for this year.

So, let's dispense with the faffing around, and let's dive straight in.

DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS (DGA)

Wednesday (10th January 2024) saw the announcement of the nominees for the 76th Directors' Guild Awards. The film nominees are as follows:

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film
Greta Gerwig (Barbie)
Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things)
Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer)
Alexander Payne (The Holdovers)
Martin Scorsese (Killers Of The Flower Moon)

Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film
Cord Jefferson (American Fiction)
Manuela Martelli (Chile '76)
Noora Niasari (Shayda)
A.V. Rockwell (A Thousand And One)
Celine Song (Past Lives)

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary
(previously announced)
Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp (Bobi Wine: The People's President)
Mstyslav Chernov (20 Days In Mariupol)
Madeleine Gavin (Beyond Utopia)
Davis Guggenheim (Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie)
D. Smith (Kokomo City)

Greta Gerwig becomes the third woman director to receive two DGA nominations (after Kathryn Bigelow and Jane Campion). No real shocks or surprises in the "theatrical feature film" category; I fully expect to see this replicated in the Oscars Best Director category.

The "Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film" has been named for former DGA president and director Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter, Gorillas In The Mist, The World Is Not Enough) who passed away in 2021.

The 76th Annual DGA Awards will take place on Saturday 10th February 2024

SCREEN ACTORS' GUILD (SAG) AWARDS

This afternoon (Friday 12th January), the nominations for the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were announced. Again, they were announced via Instagram Live, with Issa Rae (Insecure, Barbie, American Fiction) and Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Eternals, Silicon Valley) hosting.

Below is the list of film nominations:

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
American Fiction
Barbie
The Color Purple
Killers Of The Flower Moon
Oppenheimer

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Bradley Cooper (Maestro)
Colman Domingo (Rustin)
Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers)
Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer)
Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Annette Bening (Nyad)
Lily Gladstone (Killers Of The Flower Moon)
Carey Mulligan (Maestro)
Margot Robbie (Barbie)
Emma Stone (Poor Things)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction)
Willem Dafoe (Poor Things)
Robert De Niro (Killers Of The Flower Moon)
Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer)
Ryan Gosling (Barbie)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer)
Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple)
Penélope Cruz (Ferrari)
Jodie Foster (Nyad)
Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers)

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
Barbie
Guardians Of The Galaxy: Volume 3
Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny
John Wick: Chapter 4
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Barbie and Oppenheimer lead the field with four nods apiece, while Killers Of The Flower Moon and American Fiction have three.

A couple of interesting admissions and omissions: this is the first time Penélope Cruz has received any major awards love for Ferrari (and this is one of the first major awards to even recognise Michael Mann's biopic); Leonardo DiCaprio's omission in the Best Actor category has raised a few eyebrows, as has the complete shut-out of Todd Haynes' May December (three of its main cast- Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton- have appeared in many other awards shortlists). I was surprised not to see either Sandra Hüller (for Anatomy Of A Fall) or Greta Lee (for Past Lives) recognised for Best Actress.

The SAG Awards will be handed out on Saturday 24th February 2024, with the ceremony streaming on Netflix.

PRODUCERS GUILD AWARDS (PGA)

Today (Friday 12th January 2024) also saw the nominations for the 35th Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards. The nominated films are:

The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures
American Fiction
Anatomy Of A Fall
Barbie
The Holdovers
Killers Of The Flower Moon
Maestro
Oppenheimer
Past Lives
Poor Things
The Zone Of Interest

Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures
The Boy And The Heron
Elemental
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures
(previously announced)
20 Days In Mariupol
American Symphony
Beyond Utopia
The Disappearance Of Shere Hite
The Mother Of All Lies
Smoke Sauna Sisterhood
Squaring The Circle (The Story Of Hipgnosis)

There's been some comment made that the PGA has included two international features in the "Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures" categories, with French courtroom drama Anatomy Of A Fall and Holocaust drama The Zone Of Interest both included. I think it just goes to show the depth and breadth of international film, and it's always good to see when films break out of their own narrowly-defined categories to reach wider acclaim. I do feel that the Academy is going to follow suit, although I think it may be the former rather than the latter. But who knows?

The PGA Awards are due to be handed out on Sunday 25th February 2024.

Congratulations to all nominees!

Coming up next for awards season: the Critics' Choice Awards will be given out on Sunday (14th January)

Awards Season 2024: Golden Globes Winners

Last night (Sunday 7th January 2024), the winners of the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards, for both television and film. were announced, in a ceremony hosted by comedian Jo Koy (Haunted Mansion, Don't Make Him Angry, The Monkey King). It was broadcast on CBS in the US, after the group ended a longstanding relationship with broadcaster NBC.

This is the first ceremony since Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries took control of the Golden Globes, following the disbanding of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) in June 2023. A group of voters consisting of 300 journalists representing 76 countries selected the nominees and eventual winners.

Here is the full list of film winners.

Best Motion Picture (Drama): Oppenheimer

Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy): Poor Things

Best Director: Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer)

Best Actor (Drama): Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer)

Best Actor (Comedy or Musical): Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers)

Best Actress (Drama): Lily Gladstone (Killers Of The Flower Moon)

Best Actress (Comedy or Musical): Emma Stone (Poor Things)

Best Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer)

Best Supporting Actress: Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers)

Best Screenplay: Justine Triet and Arthur Harari (Anatomy Of A Fall)

Best Original Score: Ludwig Göransson (Oppenheimer)

Best Original Song: "What Was I Made For?" (Barbie)

Best Foreign Language Film: Anatomy Of A Fall

Best Animated Feature Film: The Boy And The Heron

Cinematic And Box Office Achievement: Barbie

Oppenheimer was the runaway winner of the evening, picking up five awards (having been nominated for eight), with French courtroom drama Anatomy Of A Fall, Barbie, Alexander Payne's The Holdovers, and Poor Things tying with two awards apiece.

Despite multiple nominations, Past Lives, Maestro. May December, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Zone Of Interest went away emptyhanded.

Lily Gladstone made history as the first Indigenous actor to win a Golden Globe, taking home the Best Actress (Drama) award for Killers Of The Flower Moon (the film's only award, despite being nominated for seven); she is of Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce heritage, and spoke Blackfeet at the start of her powerful acceptance speech.

The "Cinematic And Box Office Achievement" award is for films that grossed at least $100 million domestically and $150 million worldwide, hence its rather eclectic nominations list (with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Oppenheimer, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour all included along with the eventual winner, Barbie). Does smack a little bit of the Oscars' botched attempt for a "Most Popular Film" category, but it seems they've at least given it a bit more thought.

But perhaps they should have given a bit more thought to their choice of host. Jo Koy's opening monologue has been variously described by other media outlets as "cringeworthy", "painful", "unfunny", "awkward", and "distasteful". I watched some of it online and decided that there were better things I could be doing with my time, like alphabetising my spice rack. Koy's stand-up specials are well thought of; however, I don't think many people will be going to seek them out if this hosting gig is their first exposure to him.

No lifetime achievement awards this time round (so no Cecil B. DeMille or Carol Burnett Awards) but they may be reinstated in coming years. Fair enough.

Congratulations to all winners!

Coming up for awards season, Wednesday (10th January) sees the announcement of this years' Director's Guild Awards.
